Scrapbooking: The Who, What, Where, When and Why

In years to come when we are reminiscing and looking over our cherished scrapbooks are we going to know who is in our pictures? Why they are in our pictures, where the picture was taken, when it was taken and why. As time passes it can get harder and harder to remember these things and so now, while we are creating our scrapbooks and compiling our memories we need to document the who, what, where, when and why.

People change over time. We start out as babies and age into cute elderly grandparents. But when you look at your scrapbooks are you going to be able to decipher who that cute little baby is or who that elderly woman is holding that baby? When scrapbooking it is so important to label who is who. “Great Grandma Jane holding baby Ella.” Now you know who is in the picture. However is this going to be enough? Every now and then labeling last names and relations to other people can help future generations in knowing that “Great Grandma Jane” was my dad’s grandmother.

Sometimes when looking at a picture it can be hard knowing what was going on. Why was our entire family gathered together? What were we doing? While labeling who is in our pictures it is also important to know what was going on. Were we gathered together for a reunion, funeral, party? Just by knowing what was going on can help us understand how we lived, how we chose to spend our time and what was important to us. “Jensen Family Reunion, cleaning up a city park.”

Now we know who is in our pictures, what we were doing but where were we? In 50 years to come how awesome will it be to look back at a picture and see that you visited Malad Idaho every year with your family. Places change over time and to know where a picture was taken can help us see how things have changed. The way life used to be. Including addresses, this can also be an intriguing thing for us to investigate in the future. “Our first home, 505 W 5000 S Ogden Utah.” Knowing an address our future generations can visit that precise location and see where their family once lived. Also when cropping your pictures to fit on your pages make sure you don’t cut too much out. It says we were at Grandma’s house in Layton Utah but what did her house look like? When you cut too much, memories can fade away and we won’t remember the way your grandmother kept her yard or what the house looked like 50 years ago.

It is so easy to forget to label when a picture was taken. Our cameras so conveniently keep track of those dates, but are we transferring those dates to our scrapbooks? To know when pictures were taken helps future generations to know how long ago certain events happened and most importantly birthdates or perhaps when a loved one passed away. By knowing these dates we can determine how old Grandpa was when Grandma passed away. Or how old baby Jake was when he took his first step. By having this information you can look back and compare your own children’s progress through life, or even understand how your great grandfather always had his fields planted by mother’s day.

And finally why was this picture taken? What motivated someone to take a picture of their toddler sitting on the second step of their home? Scrapbooks really are journals. Record your feelings. “When Jamie sits on our front porch waving to our neighbors passing by I feel like life is perfect.” Or why someone took a picture of a sunset, “Driving home every day I watch as the sun sets over the trees and I know I am almost home.” Or even a picture of a rose bush. “Mom’s red rose bush she took care of all summer so it would continue to bloom.”

So much information. It can make scrapbooking feel like an endless job of personal and family history. Well it is. But as you scrapbook remember that you don’t have to label each and every picture. Group your pictures together chronologically. “All these pictures were taken at our family reunion 1987.” Then once you’ve labeled who is who you don’t have to repeat it time and time again for that one event. If Grandma Kelly shows up in several of your pictures you only need to label her once. Good luck scrapbooking and always remember the who, what, where and when of all your memories you will cherish for lifetimes to come.

On a recent family vacation to California I brought home a small baggie of sand. Look how fun this scrapbooking page was to put together. I just used a liquid glue like Elmer's to write "Ventura Beach" and make the squiggles. I then pour the sand over the glue and let it sit for a awhile. Then I dumped the extra sand onto a spare sheet of paper, bending the paper like a funnel I was able to put the sand back into the baggie. Make sure you let this dry overnight before adding to your scrapbook.

Die cuts don't have to be for scrapbooking or card making only.

This poster is being used as a way to choose who will be the teacher's helper.

This was very simple to make. I got on-line and searched for a vase, printed and cut it out. I then took green paper and used scissors that cut wavy lines to use as the stems. If you don't have scissors that do that - straight stems would work just fine. I added a few bugs then I had the poster board laminated. I then used craft velcro dots and pressed one side of the dots along the stems. The other half of velcro was placed on the backside of the flowers where I had written the names of the children.

This idea could also be made and used on a smaller scale. For example each of your children could have their own vase, which would have 4 spots where flowers could be attached. They would be given flowers with jobs printed or pictured on the backside. Their vase would become full of flowers as they completed their jobs.

This past Christmas my husband bought me a red personal die cutting machine. I was so exited! I am really into scrapbooking and love to use die cuts. I usually purchase them from http://www.nouglydiecuts.com/ But I thought making my own would be fun. Well, this past week I got out all of my scrapbooking supplies and decided to get to work. I am over a year behind and have a lot of pictures to scrapbook. My die cutting machine was set up and ready for all the creative and cute die cuts I was going to make. I laid out my first scrapbook page and decided that cute snowflake die cuts would work great with my pictures.

I choose the colors of acid free cardstock I wanted to use, and got to work using my die cutting machine. It took time deciding which cartridge had the cutest snowflake die cuts. Then I attached my acid free scrapbook paper firmly to the cutting matt and cut, then I cut its matching layered piece.

I then had to glue the two die cut pieces together. Hmm, the snowflake die cut was super delicate. The die cut had very thin parts. The only thing I have ever used in my scrapbooks was acid free glue sticks. So I pulled it out and began the tedious work of trying to keep the glue on the back of the die cut. It took me 10 minutes to get my first 2 inch snowflake die cut made!

I am someone who sits down and gets my scrapbooking done; on average 18 or more pages done in a day. However today because I used my die cutting machine I only created 6 pages. I was so disappointed. I felt as if I had wasted my day and I wasn’t happy with the way my handmade die cuts turned out. Glue had squished out from under the super thin parts of my die cuts and it made my pages look dirty. I had even ran to the store and bought a glue pen which could be applied in the thinner areas of the die cut. Even so, on some areas of the die cuts the glue still leaked out.

The pages I do are usually quick, easy and VERY CUTE! Not wanting to give up on my personal die cutting machine so fast, I gave it a few more chances. I have come to the conclusion that a personal die cutting machine is not an ideal scrapbooking tool. It is fun to use for special things, birthday cards and school projects for my kids. But for fast, productive scrapbooking it is a hassle.

So I have gone back to my “regular” scrapbooking technique. DIE CUTS!!! Illustrated die cuts are SO much cuter! All you have to do is pop the die cuts out, put a few swipes of glue on the back and you’re set to go! I know there are some scrapbookers out there who love taking hours at a time making just one page and I take my hat off to them. But I have two kids and piles and piles of pictures that need to be scrapbooked. I love my scrapbooks, it is so much fun looking back at the fun times my family has had together and how things have changed. So for me it is very important to stay caught up.

Die Cuts turned into Christmas Money Holders.

Great idea mom. . . this year she gave all her kids and grandkids money for Christmas. She did this in a very fun way. She doubled mounted die cuts, used glue dots for depth added a few emblishments, cut out a tag from cardstock, made a pocket on the back and hung them on the tree! They were the cutest tag ordainments around. The exciting part for the grandkids was that there was a 20 dollar bill in the back pocket. Thanks mom ~ what a fun way to use diecuts!!

The scan of this greeting card does not do it justice. This card was made by using the 'flower' diecut and the piece of cardstock directly surrounding it. (most people through this piece away.) What you need to do is place 'glue dots' behind the flower and 'two sided tape' (or what ever you use) for a flat mount on the surrounding area - then press down and the 'flower' will pop up. This is a fun way to use everything - you still have the 'frame' to use another time. The words 'Happy Birthday' was stamped above the 'flowers'. This technique can be used with any of the "Frame with Matching Die Cuts' available on our website.

Glitter Glue

Some of my favorite pages are when I use die cuts that don't even match the color scheme. I think they jump out and say "look at me ~ I'm different and it's OK!"

I purchased some stick on fake rhinestone type gems and put them on the flowers to sparkle them up.

No Ugly Die Cuts ~ My STORY

I have been scrapbooking for about 22 years. Started when my daughter was about 3 years old. It's fun for me to see how they've evolved over the years. My older children's baby books are very simple and plain. And...............I'm always looking for simple and inexpensive ways to help speed up the process. I'm not one that can spend hours on a single page, because of the fact: each of my children have their own scrapbooks. ("yes" books with an "s".) I was thrilled when my daughter was old enough to take over her own scrapbook. So, right now I am doing 5 scrapbooks. One for each of my four boys and one for my husband and me. ("yes" I am behind by a couple of years, but that's another story. I will get caught up I always do) Anyway.......I enjoy using die cuts that I've purchased at "fair-type" events. I have found that using die cuts is a "speedy-fast" way to construct creative scrapbook pages. However....
I have found that finding "die-cuts" at craft stores is getting harder and harder, if not impossible. I asked an employee once and was told that "the Cricut Machine has taken over that market." ("yes" I own one of these) Nothing can take the place of a cute illustrated die cut.
I started looking on-line to purchase die cuts and everything I found was UGLY! "OK" my exact words..."butt ugly!" Old school die cuts that were just the shape of an object. YUCK!
Then to make matters worse you use a search engine and type in "scrapbooking die cuts" and pull up hundreds of sites claiming they carry them. PROBLEM is you can't find them!! I am forever getting lost in on-line scrapbook supply stores? ("yes" I've lost my parked car before) They carry everything but the kitchen sink! And most of the time I don't even find die cuts on their site, if by chance I do...UGLY! So......This is how No Ugly Die Cuts became my reality.

Use a Frame as a Divider

My "Insanity" comes from keeping up with 5 scrapbooks!!

It's amazing how our memories are linked to smells, places, sounds and I believe the most powerful memory reminder is pictures.

I have preserved my children's lives chronologically in their scrapbooks. All the many many hours I've spent on their scrapbooks has been worth it!

It's a lot of fun for me to watch my children take a trip down memory lane using their scrapbooks as a guide.

My oldest son pictured here is holding all but one of his scrapbooks. He's on his way over to his fiancé to share with her his childhood. He told me afterwards that he could have spent hours talking about the pictures, because it brought back so many memories.

NO PROBLEM. . . . Simple solution ~ just cut the frame at the opposite corners and now you can frame any size picture.

On vacation my boys had to share a bed. I'm sooo sorry for their future wives!

Greeting Card made from Die cut w/matching Frame

Only the center part of this "Die Cut w/matching Frame" was used to make this card. Items used were: black cardstock (to use as a layered effect), 4 black brads, glue dots for a 3D look (placed under the ''Love"), black & purple ribbon, printed purple paper and of course white cardstock that was cut and folded to make the card.
